I have a 1955 235 six with hydraulic lifters. I purchased this engine used about 5 years ago and have about 4800 miles on it since then. I have changed the oil 6 times since then 10-30 valvoline and a cup of marvel oil.
The engine runs fine, has very good oil presure, burns no oil at all.
The problem is that on start up, the lifters are noisy until they pump up. The longer it sits, the noisier they are.
After a week or ten days, It takes 4-5 seconds for them to pump up. Its irritating.
Is this some thing to worry about or is there an answer to this without tearing down the motor?
Thank you, Jerry

Skip the Marvel Mystery oil. It thins the oil. Other than replacing all the lifters with questionable new ones don't worry about it.I assume the lifters are properly adjusted.

I agree. Stop using the Marvel Mystery Oil for a couple of oil changes and see if that makes a difference.

I had the same problem once so I tried STP since it is thick and the lifter noise on start up went away.

Yes, the lifters may be a little worn and 15W-40 oil may help.

Thanks guys: I tried straight 30w on one oil change, no MM and had to readjust the idle. This concerned me and went back to 10/30w and had to lower the idle back. It runs so nicely I'm just going to drive it.
Thank you again, Jerry
