Recently bought '50 Chevy with 12 volt conversion and 6 volt starter. Had starter rebuilt but still fails to engage ring gear about 1 time out of 10. Why? Do I need a 12 volt starter?

Welcome to Chevy Chatter. Glad to have you with us!

A six volt starter will work just fine on 12 volts as long as you only engage the starter for about 10 to 15 seconds each time that the starter is activated. There is really no need to change to change the starter.

Check the teeth on the flywheel. If they are badly worn that could keep the Bendix Drive gear from engaging the flywheel from time to time.
