At least they had the benefit of a camera. When I was in college three friends and I were driving thru Massachusetts when we were stopped by the state police and went thru a similar situation. Turned out there was a bank robbery and the getaway car was the same make, model, and color as we were in. Fortunately we did not have to spend the night in jail but when you have guns pointed at you it makes a lasting impression.

I hope they win their lawsuit. I didn't see any reason to be treated the way they were, especially having 3 guns pointed at them. They made no effort to resist and I think it was pretty clear they weren't armed. Law enforcement is undoubtedly a tough job, but sometimes I think its a power trip for some and common sense goes out the window. I understand they don't know who they may be dealing with, but in this case I think they handled it wrong. And, to see an old Chevy get towed to an impound yard, that's just wrong.

I've lost all respect for the men in blue...CHP pulled me over for going 53 in a 55 zone...It's in the report...Late at night and they thought I might be drunk...Searched my car for no reason...Locals say they do it all the time...Their bored with nothing better to do...This is out in the backwoods...Another time I had six cops point their Glocks at my head by mistake...Said get on the ground...Fat chance...They relented and asked me to just put my hands on the hood...Locals say don't drive after dark...I moved to the country for peace and quite...Now, I can't even drive 2 miles to the store at night without worry...

Sounds like the story line from "My Cousin Vinny"

WOW! This story is beyond sad.

Based on all the crazies in the world today .... and the resulting ongoing stress levels with police officers, I'm just happy to see the guy and his wife didn't get shot.

The wonderful thing about not having hand guns in society in Australia and NZ is the attitude of police ... they are not worried about getting shot at every time they pull over a car..sorry guys ,this is a dilemma of your own making .. can't have it both ways....

The situation was not good but the officer was reacting to information that supplied to him from his dispatcher, at that point he was dealing a stolen car. Plates do not mean anything they come on and off with two screws. There is a lot of low-rider interest in these cars and the low rider community does have a reputation for finding someone else's car to assist with their projects (sorry guys, facts are facts). There is a large Low Rider following in the Vegas area, so we really do not know the magnitude of the entire story. Once it came back as stolen the police had to treat it as a stolen car and the driver and passenger were in possesion of a stolen vehicle. I am not defending the police yes they should have used common sense when they saw that driver had no clue what was going on, and the driver also should have used common sense when there was more then one car and they told him to place the keys on the roof, at that point it was not a traffic violation. It is a shame it had to go to the impound, but remember it was a stolen car at that point

I have to look at this differently, there had to be a stolen car fitting the discription, and the VIN number was one digit off and came up stolen, so there was a stolen and still is a stolen 62 Chevy out there. At least they were looking for someone's car.
I myself learned the hard way that when in that situation, the last thing police want to hear "are you talking to me"
At least they made sure his head did not hit the roof of the patrol car when they loaded him in the back seat, they were not that nice to me.

By the way you don't see too many Corona Cream 62's

Plain and simple the information from the police was inaccurate and that caused the problem. While it seems that common sense did not enter into the picture the police need to follow procedure rather than personal opinion. When crossing the border in to Canada years ago my wife and I were detained and our car stripped and searched. Seems that my registration number came up in the computer as belonging to a missing and wanted "boat" but apparently all that showed up when they entered the number was instructions to detain and search. They did at least pack everything back in fairly neatly.

Common sense....... there must have been a report for a stolen car that fit that discription or they would not have pulled it, second there was a stolen car becasue a similar number came up...Steve ereryone who is quilty says they did not do it, problem is that causes a lot of problems for the people who really did do nothing wrong. The officer did his job based on the information provided.
Steve, not all bad guys look like bad guys.

Wow you have some bad luck, you were in two mistaken identity situations, in my case there was no mistake I was the the drunk they were looking for. If I only said "yes officer" instead of "are you (blanking) talking to me" I might have gotten out if it, or at the very least avoided cracked with a nightstick in the back of my leg, an three nights in the Bronx jail system This was over 35 years ago at a Yankee Redsox game
