As before, my steering box and column are out of the car. 1929 Chevrolet Sedan.
I've removed the 4 bolts and side bolts, and the pitman shaft and its gear and several thick washers from the pitman shaft.
I've removed the end cup and the lower thrust bearing (including the balls in their retainer, and the races for that end.
I removed the Mast Jacket Clamp and attempted to pull the worm and main shaft through the bottom so I can get to the upper bearings and races (the balls are loose and keep falling out).
My question: How do I get either the worm and main shaft out the bottom, or the mast jacket off the main shaft? Or simply put, how do I remove the upper thrust bearing?

Hello eldredjames, I don't know if the 29 is similar to the 31 steering box construction or not, but if you look at BB's website 31chevrolet.com it talks about how to dismantle and adjust the box with pictures. It says that the mast jacket should unscrew from the box. Maybe the 29 does also.

Yes, and the instructions for adjusting a '29 in the 29-30 only repair manual is different than those for a '31-'32 in the 29-32 repair manual. Mainly because the 31 and 32 have a tube that screws into the steering box whereas the 29-30 have a tube that is simply pushed onto the box and clamped.

OK, here's my problem. The steering shaft has a key up by the steering wheel end. When I started to pull it out the steering box end, the key was hidden in the tube.
It won't pull out with vice grips, i guess i need to heat up the column? Guys?

posted in your picture...
mine was stuck hard in as well, soak it with some Liquid Wrench Penetrating Oil, let it soak in for a few.
I worked it back and forth with a flat head gently working it out slowly. once removed i cleaned it and the key way up and then it fit in nicely going back together...
