We just got a 1950 3100 truck but we couldn't, nor could the previous owner find the location of the VIN. Any places to look in particular?

The serial number is on the left door hinge pillar midway between hinges.

The DMV in California uses the engine block number as your VIN number...In other words, the VIN # on your Title paperwork will match the block #...It can be found a few inches "south" of the distributor on the original motor...If it doesn't match the title, the engine has been exchanged and should be updated at DMV by appointment only ( they only inspect on certain days ) Bring your own flashlight and be prepared to show them where it is...These folks are clowns...Same is true if it hasn't been reg. in awhile...Don't let them talk you in to a trip to the CHP office...If they pull that "card", it means the person behind the counter doesn't know what their doing...Ask for the supervisor...Good Luck...

With all the "run around" one can get, if the title numbers and the vehicle serial numbers don't match, I would be darn certain all the numbers matched BEFORE I handed over the cash to buy.
I know of a case where a gent bought a vehicle, serial numbers didn't match the paperwork.
The car was declared a "stolen vehicle", was then returned to the rightful owner ..... AFTER the new owner put money and time into the "stolen vehicle".
If the numbers don't match, don't buy.

There's a Chevy plate in the doorway but it has no VIN stamped, there is a spot for it but its blank. And the number on the block does not match the VIN. The car is registered in CA. I actually called the CHP and they basically said if you got your registration from DMV there no need for any VIN verification. They said on my 1950 they regarded the VIN as a "Hull" number and it wont be something I will be able to find. So, CHP said no worries, DMV said here's your registration enjoy and so we are off with our new ride :) Pic of our new Truck, cars in the background
