I was wondering if there was an easy way to install the glass lens into the aluminum rim without damaging it.

It is necessary to bend the tabs up slightly to allow the lens to be slipped into place. The ease of the operation depends on the rim. Is it original or a repo?

It's an original. I broke one tab on one of the rims by bending it trying to install the glass. On this one, I managed to install the lens. The other rim is in better shape and the tabs are a little stiffer and harder to bend.

I feel your pain.

Over the last few years I have managed to have two rims come off my 25 Roadster headlights while in a tour. One flew over the fender and landed on the running board. The other rim came off and was run over by me. As I looked in the mirror I saw the car behind me run over the light rim also. My rims are now secured on the bottom by a small metal screw. Yea, had to drill through the rim and light. Haven't lost another since.

I had the same difficulty, just took some patience and careful prying on the tab. Interesting that your trim ring is aluminum. Mine (1924) are original but are nickel plated steel. I also have a set of re-pops which are aluminum but I don't care for them as they lack the shine of the Nickel.

Thanks GW. I'll keep working at it. I found the aluminum rings shine up nicely using a buffer wheel.

You could try annealing the aluminum tab. Heat just the tab with a pencil torch or large soldering iron. It's the same precess as making copper or brass soft to work with.

I finally got all the lens in. The broken tab is a little rusty so I just cleaned it up and used JB Weld to hold it together. I don't think it will pose a problem until such time as I need to replace the lens.
