Cliff in Maryland, new to our web site, has posted a request in our Parts - Wanted Forum for a 1940 cross member for his Master 85. From what I can tell in the online Parts Manual 1940-1948 used the same cross member (7.010 Member Frame Cross Front part # 3661896).

Because of the cost for Greyhound Bus shipping and all the inconvenience we both need confirmation that my cross member is the right one. If you want to see what I have just click on my Photo Bucket storage.

1941 cross member

Thanks, Mike

P.S. To see all my cross member pictures click the LEFT arrow on the side of the first image that comes up on my Photo Bucket page. All are welcome to look through my pictures. The "X" rated ones are in the middle. "Tis So," Charlie!!!

Mike.. a 1940 Master 85 is a KB series, and used leaf spring front suspension , and a front crossmember similar to the 1939 master 85 front crossmember.

Hi Jack. I assume what you are telling Mike is the 40 master 85 has the only crossmember available. The 39 doesn't fit either I assume. Thanks for the help. Cliff

Hi Cliff,
yes the 1940 front crossmember is different to the 1939 master 85. I think the difference is that the 194o Master 85 crossmember has a plate riveted on to mount the radiator further fwd , but the 1937 - 1939 radiator is supported directly onto the crossmember. (but I haven't seen one to compare, but the 1940 part is listed in the parts book as different.

If your crossmember is rusted through , can you remove it and weld in repairs, and then reinstall it. Or even repair it in situ.

I have repaired 1939 crossmembers previously , and even made a replacement many years ago , but now think I should have just repaired the original one.

Here is a picture of the 1940 Master 85 front cross member. As Jack thought, it looks like it is the same as the 37-39 cross member (for straight axle models) with a plate added to mount the radiator.
