i removed the dome light cover and found the wire was disconnected. Hooked the wire up and the light is on all the time. Tired rotating the light switch but it still stays on I guess that's why the wire was unhooked. Is the light switch what controls it?

My my 47 has a switch on the right side post between the doors and also door switches on both front doors. Check for those switches, they provide the ground for the ligh to work,so also check for a grounded wire between the light and switches.

Reading your post I would have to assume that the light switch is the main culprit , if it will not turn it off when door is closed.

Remove the switch from the post and check continuity of power to the switch. In off position your probe should not light up and on when in on position. Agrin

Make sure your headlight switch doesn't turn the lights on and off also ????

Year and model of the car would help.

If you have a multimeter, can check the switch for continuity. If you have continuity whether it is on or off (or in/out if it is a door switch), then you have a sticking switch. Could try to separate the contacts carefully and file down the grunge.

Thanks Chevy Nut for your answer as to where the switch was. I guess my switch is missing. Thanks for all who responded.

I did not see Gene's answer on my computer drink but I'm attaching the '40 manual, showing the location of the dome light slide switch.
