Hi Guys: I have a common problem on both my '41 pickup and my '48 Fleetmaster Cabriolet, there's a short in the horn wire that snakes up the column. I have had to disconnect the horn on both vehicles bacause they could sound at any time, and sometimes they stay on. How/where is the connection made inside the column tube and how would you suggest I replace this wire? I have an old extra column tube, and even looking inside it's not very clear. As always your input is appreciated. Bowtie.

don't know exactly about yours, but the '40 & earlier horn wire was embedded in the upper mast bearing, moulded into the rubber during manufacture...the entire rubber bearing with new wire should be available from chipper, fs, and cotf...  epi

You may just need an adjustment? There are two adjustments that can be made on the horn.
1.Horn ring adjustment. There is a small screw on the back side of the horn ring by loosening it you can slide the wheel hub up or down to adjust the the contact space.
2.The tension of the horn ring can be adjusted by two screws under the cap. clockwise increases tension, counterclockwise decreases tension.
I would try this before you change the contact & wire in the columm. My horn used to blow when I turned corners at times. These adjustments fixed the problem for me.

On the '48 the wire is visibly in bad shape. I have adjusted the horn ring, but can short the horn by moving that old abraded wire at the point it exits the column. I have even tried to shove conduit up the column around the wire to insulate it. I can't get it far enough up to solve the problem. The truck however doesn't have a horn ring to adjust, I wonder it there's another adjustment somewhere - - that wire doesn't look as sad as the '48. It could be an adjustment somewhere. Bowtie

In both cases the mast jacket needs to be removed to either replace the mast jacket bushing and wire or to replace the bushing. I would take a look in the shop manuals for instructions on removing the jackets.
