Hi all! Does anyone have a picture of the brushes/assembly for their starter? Every time I rebuild mine, I reinstall it, and crank it for about 5 seconds and it smokes, the band/strap from one brush to another keeps burning out, melting or whatever!! I've use brass and I've used copper but it always stops working!!
Any suggestions as to what I'm doing or not doing??
Thank You!

You must have a short or very high resistance somewhere. I first would check the field coils to see if they are grounded.

The brush lead that goes from one brush to the other must be covered with an insulated material so that the lead itself does not touch any metal. Is your brush lead covered with a non-conductive material?

Thanks Chipper and JD, yes I have the band wrapped in electrical tape and a cloth tape on the outside. When I opened it up again, it appears that one end of the lead shorted out with the screw to the inner windings. I'm going to try some liquid tape on the screw to see if that helps with the shorting!
I'm going to try to post a picture of what I'm looking at!
