Having watched the Barrett Jackson auction the last few days, there has been some absolutely beautiful Chevrolet and GMC trucks come thru. Although a few have gotten absurd high prices, there are quite a few that were bargains. The 1931 Chevrolet Huckster was exceptionally nice.

Unfortunately we up here in Canada cannot watch the auction from Tuesday thru sunday anymore due to the loss of speedvision and velocity TV is not available here.

The cable network is picking it up on Saturday jan `17 from 4 pm till 11 pm. Lots of interesting RON PRATT collection cars and stuff being sold all week.

I can hardly wait for Saturday. Unfortunately only a very few true classics appear at this auction.

Happy in Canada with our .80 cent dollar, NOT

yes will be watching it starting at 4 pm Saturday on discovery.

Up here for some reason the speedvision channel got killed and dropped by rogers network in a $$$ dispute last spring. The replacement , velocity TV , has not been picked up except for this one occasion. One day the prime day and prime time is better than nothing.

Traditionally, Tuesday was known as the "economy night" at Barrett Jackson, but last night proved that phrase to be false.

Seems the cars I would have normally seen on a Saturday were getting their BIG six figure bids on Tuesday night.

I understand Pratt has brought 100 cars, valued at 50 million by one of the announcers, from his collection to the auction. Maybe with this big influx of high dollar rides, "economy Tuesday" has vanished for this year.

Lots of six figure cars being sold on the first night.

WOW. driving

It must be nice to have that kind of "Disposable Cash" to buy collectable cars...Envy is not a good thing, though...Most of us have owned great cars over the years we wish we could have back...Sold them for "penny's on the dollar" compared to what there worth now...Most of these shows I can't bare to watch...When I see a car I probably sold for pocket change, now going for six figures...Oh well, such is life...

I would like to give my opinion on Barret Jackson auctions and welcome other opinions as well. When the Barret Jackson auction appeared on television years back, you could still get a good deal on a car.Through the years,in my opinion, they have greatly inflated prices to where the common man can hardly afford a car going across their stage!Granted, there are a few exceptions, not many.My idea of going to an auction is to possibly get a decent car for a decent price. Thanks to them,it doesn't happen very often.I know it's their job to get the best price for the seller, but I think it's their own greed that jacks up these prices(They get their piece of the pie for selling the car).I've seen them stop in the middle of an auction(after the reserve was met)and almost guilt the audience to spend more money when the bidding stalled. That's flat out rediculous! Now almost every 1967-1969 camaro owner thinks they're sitting on a lump of gold.A few years back,if you had a mopar with a hemi in it,the bidding started at $100,000.My honest opinion is that they single handedly ruined the market for the buyer. Most of us don't have bottomless pockets like some of these guys,so all we can do is get a soda,or beer, and a few potato chips and watch their show and dream of owning one of their cars!Gotta go,my soda can is empty!

Mike33,

Getting one of those cars is simple; be the winning bidder. The money part is just a detail. Still with me?

a. Save up for it.
b. Get a bank loan.
c. Be successful in business or profession.
d. Hock the home.
e. Get one of those mortgages where they let you live there whilst you're still living but you can spend what it's worth today.
f. Borrow from your rich brother-in-law.
g. Rob a bank.

Now that you have the car you do understand that you must keep it in A-1 condition. You must build a climate controlled building. You can't drive it. You must keep the stinkin thing for several years and then auction it back off. The overhead will likely eat up the increase in value, if any.

You must buy a muscle car. A rare one. It must be something that there are relatively few of.

You must remember that those folks buying those car and signing the tab, as if it were nothing, are in the car business. It's a tough market. There are winners and there are losers. Both in people and in the cars themselves. Not all the cars we have owned would bring these high prices today.

If you don't know what you're doing when playing in this business you will soon find that the learning curve is slow and steep and likely to cost you a heap of money.

Just watch the action and eat the chips and drink the soda. You will likely be much better off. And, be better able to sleep at night.

You're welcome,
Charlie computer

Amen!

Worth a fortune and RARE.

RARE = the most abused / overused word in the car hobby world.

I had a '68 Dodge 440 that was by no means a "rusty junker"...I let it go about 10 years ago for $3,000 bucks...He started restoring it right away...Think it's in Montana now...Don't think he's part with it now for any amount...

There's also a Mecum auction for 10 or 12 days in Kissimmee Florida…this one really has some reasonable buys and nice cars….a lot more affordable than Barrett-Jackson…it's on TV too…watched it last year and swore I'd attend this year but never made it…Billu38

I'm asking Bruce to post "Corvette Heaven" for all of us who wish we could have one of those snazzy Corvettes. He put it out on Facebook and I sure liked it and in my case, and I expect many others, it expressed our life-long dream of obtaining one.

We should never give up the dream but there comes times when the jar is just plain empty owing to other more important things in life.

Bruce, please post it here so all can enjoy it, especially during the Barrett-Jackson season.

Thanks,
Charlie computer

I also enjoy the Mecum auction. Each car is only on the podium for 2 minutes and it's on to the next car.The prices do seem more reasonable than Barret Jackson.I actually saw a few cars on the first day that I could afford!I have always wanted a 55 Belair. As a child,I remember my father owning probably 6 of them.Back then you could get one for under $1,000.How times have changed.I still hope to own one before my time is up.

Two items ...

A few years back, "The Ramchargers" Dodge infamous drag car was auctioned off at B.J.

Car got "the short hammer" ...... was there and gone before I ate my next potato chip. Sellers of "The Ramcharger" were certainly upset with the "short" auction.

Others cars seem to stay on the block FOREVER. Go figure.

How about when you're watching the bidding on a certain B.J. car, only to be taken away by camera to the next car in line, without knowing the final outcome of the car you were watching.

B.J. has changed, Mecum now fits me better. dance

The guys who comment on BJ are much sharper then the "clowns" who comment on the Mecum Auctions. I heading down to Florida tomorrow to the Mecum Auction in Kissime. There are a few things on the docket that caught my eye

I agree with the B.J. commentators. Mike Joy is very good, long time guy. Steve Magnante is well versed, as well.

Chris Jacobs, on the other hand, from Overhaulin', offers little to the overall picture, in my opinion. greenman

One thing I must be missing. What is the value and why is the selling price through the roof on clones, tribute cars and well, fakes? On B-J several days ago there was a 56 Continental II with some un-godly huge Mustang engine under the hood. C,mon that car is a classic in every sense of the word, why do this? I think there was a beautiful old Packard with a Viper engine in it also.
Is there any value down the road in these? Ed Bittman VCCA 47508 TA 99 Dade City,Fl

A lot of people lose big money at BJ… Watch the auctions next year when the same cars come up, especially if they are at auctions that are not BJ. The cars often lose gobs of value...
