I just got my gas tank back after being professionally cleaned. After 2 weeks of very hot pressure water and solvent washings, it's pretty much free of what we suspect was old sealer put in 20 years ago. It must have reacted with today's ethanol. A nasty red sludge concoction coated the tank. The shop recommended I install a modern canister type filter (from NAPA) between the original filter in the fuel pump and the tank, just to be safe. I know a purist wouldn't add such a thing but I'm a little paranoid of dirty fuel, especially down the road, with ethanol not going away.

Question: Has anyone out there done this ? How effective is the stock screen filter on the top of the sediment bowl ?
I'm putting on a rebuilt carb soon and don't want to take any chances. Maybe Chipper could add his insight as he's seen his share of old crusty carbs ?
Thanks !

I added a clear plastic inline filter to my 32 after having my tank cleaned. I like it because I can see if its collecting any debris. It's also cleanable so it can be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled, even beside the road if necessary. I did not have the original one piece line on my car so cutting the line was not a factor.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm thinking in my case given the real possibility of residual contaminants , both a clear in-line filter installed near the tank AND the FS paper element might be a good idea.

Bears, was your paper element a # FS-235, with the 2-1/16" OD ? With a FG-1 gasket ? I think we have the same pump. Helpful pics !

I had no idea they offered such a thing. I imagine it catches a lot more than just the screen.

And I could use a nice quick and easy fix along about now...

I like the filter in the pump set up and if I had to do it again would use that set up. It keeps the original line set up and looks to be easy to service.

When I make gas lines for the driver cars I use two pieces of 5/16" steel tubing (brake line). In the middle I install a plastic see through filter that gets attached to the inner frame rail with a home made bracket. I helps to keep any crud in the gas tank from the fuel pump or carb. I also installed a paper element in the glass bowl of the fuel pump of the phaeton. They are available from auto parts stores. Some will have in stock, others order from the warehouse. Seems that there was some stuff coming from the tank that was getting between the wafer and seat in the fuel pump so the pump would not pump. Stuff went through the screen. So far haven't had that problem again.

I have an inline metal fuel filter installed along the passenger chassis rail and I have the stone filter in the glass bowl. The PO had already installed the metal filter and knowing what I know about the lousy gasoline we have, I will keep the inline filter. If I do show my car and they deduct for it at least I'll know I'll have more piece of mind about driving my car back from the show.

I did get the FG-1 gasket and screen from The Filling Station. I picked up the Paper Element from the local auto parts store.

These are the Part Numbers I have in my Notes:
Thin Glass Bowl w/ Lip what I have in the Picture
AC P/N: GF-149
WIX P/N: 33039 (Also NAPA P/N)
(Filter sits in the lip, on the ledge perfectly !!)

Thick Glass Bowl
AC P/N: GF-124
Wix P/N: 33034 (Also NAPA P/N)

Thanks Bears. Sometimes I overlook the obvious. When I pulled out the fine brass screen, is was almost completely clogged. Here it is being held up to the computer screen. Time for a new one.
The poor thing did its job courageously !

In my '32 ,I run the original glass bowl by the fuel pump and another one in the fuel line just before the carb. NAPA carries the filter elements.I buy 6-8 at a time because they usually have to order them next day.I flushed my fuel system and only run no ethanol gas. What a difference !
