The Impala coupe and convertible use a lid all of their own.

In 1959 and 1960 the convertibles and four door sedans had the same deck lid, a lot of people think the same is true for the 58's which is not. The convertible has a deck lid unique to just themselves

Thanks guys. I'm mentoring a 31 year old young man that has found a sport coupe with the 348 and 3 carbs, needs restoration from bumper to bumper. He sent me a pic of a 1958 4 door asking if the truck lid would interchange. 1-1/2 years ago he wanted a 1949-1953 Chevrolet pick-up. He found one in San Francisco and asked me how to get it transported. I told him if he bought the gas I would go get it. He then found one in northern Texas and he and I went and got it, he bought the gas. It was personalized (modified). I'm encouraging him do this Impala original especially since it has that 348 3 carb set-up. He just got married in September and I told him since they plan to have children he should be looking for a station wagon instead of a coupe.

If he does the coupe nicely he may be able to sell it for enough to pay for the kids college education. I convinced my wife that a hardtop was much safer for kids as they had no door handles to pull on and thus was able to have 68 and 72 Chevelle Malibu's. Great investments as I was able to run them for 4 years each and put 40,000 miles on them and still sold them for more than I paid.

That young man did buy that 1958 Sport coupe. The seller agreed to take the body off the frame and replace all rusted panels. Danny will bring the frame home soon and get started. He was asking me yesterday where to take the engine to overhaul, the transmission and the rear end. I'm helping him with sourcing. It is exciting to see this young 32 year old tackle this. He told me he had a dream of restoring a car and always thought of waiting until retirement. He did have a cancer one year ago, appears to be cured. I think that sped up the process to live now, complete those items on the bucket list and not wait.

The hardtop trunklids are VERY hard to come by especially in good shape. As stated above there are 3 different trunklids, one for the 2 tailight cars(bel air, biscayne, delray) one for Impala hardtop and one for Impala Convertible. If he is not in a hurry I MAY have an extra for sale, if he is in a hurry there is one on ebay that is listed @ $1500 same guy on facebook has it at $1250. Brent Reese has one 714-720-3438 (Covina, Ca) I have two both need some work but I haven't decided if I want to repair then sell the extra I have or sell it as is and leave it to the next guy. The bottom lip almost always are rough on these. The 348's have some quirks that you want to make sure the builder is familiar with The EARLY 58's used a rope seal and there are 4pieces to the rear main seal plus had the issues with spark plug cooling, later 58 348's had 2pc rear main seal and revised plug location. make sure rear cam bearing is installed correctly with the 3 oil holes lined up at 10-2-6 oclock. I Lamar Walden would probably be the a very good resource for the details that need special attention. http://lwaengines.com/
