Hello: Anybody know how you remove a lock cylinder from a '48 ignition switch and install the cylinder it in a new switch?? Do you NEED a key? I suspect it has something to do with the small hole in the stainless cover. I can always see a lock smith, but like everything else would rather do it myself. Thanks as always for your help, Bowtie

put the key in the ignition switch, turn it counterclockwise till it stops, insert a paperclip thru the hole in the "stainless cover", and while depressing the paperclip(you'll feel the resistane from a spring),rotate the lock cylinder counterclockwise about 20 degrees, and then withdraw the lock cylinder. the shop manuals describe the proceedure if my description is not clear.good luck. mike

My 48 3-position ignition switch has no key and it can be rotated to the center and clockwise positions, but not the counter-clockwise position because it needs a key. So, can the lock cylinder be removed with no key? Thanks, Larry

I think I have tried this and the requirement is to have the correct key in order to remove the cylinder, it should be in the locked position before the hole will line up with the locking pin.

I had a door handle off and I took the door handle to a locksmith, he made a key that also worked on the ignition, on a 51, I don't know if a 48 is the same.

Mr Macky is indeed correct (several times). I also took a door handle from my 48 to a locksmith and he made a key for it. Turns out that all the locks on a 48 are the same. On mine anyway and I'm guessing that it's typical.

Bill, when I am being teased, it means someone else is getting a break! I wish I knew more about what this computer has against me, maybe it is the way I pound the keys, I don't know what most of the ones not alphabetically inclined even do or why they are there. Most of what I have learned was from one of my young coworkers or someone 40 years my junior.

Couldn't agree more.
Computers! Arrrrgh!! I HATE 'EM. The 'problem' is they're pretty much a necessity these days. If you don't have one folks look at you like you're from a group of extinct chiefly terrestrial carnivorous or herbivorous reptiles of the Mesozoic era.
