Dear listers,
Car = 1929 AC sports roadster. This post concerns building a new speedometer cable - I have a replacement inner cable that you thread into the outer and swage the end contact on. I have never seen a complete cable as the one on the car was ruined. How much of the inner cable should be visible sticking out, on each end? Very grateful for any info & suggestions.
Thanks,
Dave

Make sure that you don't have an issue with the speedometer head. Resistance in that unit is the # 1 reason for cables breaking. If it is lack of lubrication in the cable/housing then typically the needle or drum will oscillate or wiggle before the cable breaks. There may be a noise but it can come from the cable or speedometer so that is not a reliable indication of the problem.

I know of too many people who break several cables before suspecting the speedometer is the problem.

I agree. I have had several speedometers come into the shop with that exact problem.
