I've got a question about engine parts casting numbers. I have a 28 engine and head, the flywheel casting number is 344100, dated B-5-7. I have another flywheel that is stamped 363016, dated L-14-3. The last one has a thinner ring gear. Is that date for 23 or 33? The number is so much higher than the first that I'm thinking it might be 33. Is there a source of casting numbers that I can look up? Any thoughts on this will help.

There is an online parts manual for 1916 to 1928 parts.
Click on the link.

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/parts/1916_28/cp4cm14.htm

Lists 363015 which is 1 number off what you have posted.
344100 is not listed in the flywheel section, closest is the locating pin 344101

Beginning with my 1925 Parts List for Superior Models Series K dated Feb. 1925 to Chevrolet Master Parts Price List dated Aug 1930 list P/N 344099 as the flywheel for Superior K and later four cylinders. My parts books beginning Feb 1931 show the P/N 363015 as the flywheel for four cylinders. It is common for part numbers and casting numbers to differ by a single digit.

My conclusion is that for some reason flywheels cast and supplied after 1930 had a different number. Therefore your flywheel with casting number 363016 was a replacement cast December 14, 1933. The other was cast February 5, 1927.

Thanks Chipper, that makes sense. Another question is there are no timing marks on the 344100 flywheel, how do I go about setting the timing when I get ready to install the distributor?
Thanks for your help.

Check for the marks on the 363016 flywheel and transfer them to the 344100 flywheel. I haven't used a timing light in years. Just time it to the max. idle speed and then double check with spark advance/retard lever. If the idle speed slows noticeably then retarded and has smoother idle when advanced it will be okay.
