I have an old pair of rusty plates.
Are they worth less if I repaint them or should I leave them as they are?

They are 1935 plates for MO.
I plan to put them on a 1925 chev.

Well that won't work, Jim.
Unless maybe you made a typo on '35 or '25????

If you are going to use them restoring them would be in order.

With plate and car year and state all "matching," I'd say get them restored and licensed thru your local DMV. Total cost usually around $150-$200. To me, well worth it. All 3 of my "antique" cars (Chevs '37, '51, '54) have restored Y.O.M. plates. Adds a real nice 'touch' and LOTS cheaper than so-called vanity plates. Hope you do it. Good Luck!

I agree with you Bill. Unfortunately, many states have still not passed YOM plate licensing. Vermont is one of them. VT allows YOM plates on the front, but one still has to display a current plate (reg. or antique) on the rear. (I have a '51 VT plate on my coupe).
Hope springs eternal that all states will move to this. Call your OR legislators if OR doesn't have this.

However, you can always replace your current plate with the '25 at a show.

Jim31chev----You can register YOM plates to your car in Missouri.I have '41 plates on my '41 Coupe. Go to the DMV license office and get a form. Follow instructions. They are now like Historic Plates. You register the plates one time. No inspections and no renewal . If you have a good body man he can restore your plates for a lot less than stated earlier.

You have to use the plate that came with the year car it was issued for...YOM wise...I think it was YouTube that has a video that will show you how to restore the plate yourself...Some blasting painting and sanding...You'll go...Why didn't I think of that...? In California you still have to pay Reg. every year...Maybe 5 bucks extra or so...

My YOM plate, in very good condition ran me $300...But, that's California for ya...What I liked about it was it started with...

In NC you can run YOM tags as long as you have the current tag w/registration in the vehicle. I run a 1963 Farm Truck on my C-10, I also have a brand new never issued one stashed in the matching envelope with the numbers printed on the envelope by the DMV. Additionally I have an extensive collection of 1963 original tags from the US and Canada if anyone ever needs a photo for reference.

New York allows YOM plates but they have to be original. They won't allow restored ones although I do know a couple of guys who have gotten around that. Beamer

Sure, you can get around it...Most DMV's want to see the plates anyway...If I not mistaken CA allows fake YOM plates...They aren't even stamped or raised lettered...As long as their not already a # that's being used...Weird...

I respectfully disagree with the previous statement about CA allowing fake plates.

If a plate number is not being used, you can get 'personalized' plates with that number. The CA DMV will create the plates and charge you for them.

If you want to register a YOM plate in CA, you must have two matching original plates (they won't accept just one). I have a few '28 CA commercial plates, but they are singles. The DMV will not allow me to use any of them and there isn't somewhere that will fabricate a second plate (legally).

Cheers, Dean
