Hello All: Can the regular production horns found on a '48 passenger car be rebuilt? I have a good high note, but my low note is bad. Is there a kit available somewhere? Easy or complicated? Thanks, Bowtie

Hi guys, I didn't get much (any) response to my horn rebuilding question, so I wonder if anyone can tell me the other makes/models that would have an identical horn to the '48 passenger. I know '41-48 would probably be the same, how about up into the early '50s? If it's a 6V "sea shell" style are they all the same except for example for the mounting brkts?? How about trucks? As always your help is appreciated. Bowtie

The 1941-48 horns are the same - except some 1941 and 1942's had a straight projector horn and were of the beep-beep sound.I doubt if the 1949 and up horns would fit/look OK but you caould transplant the guts from one into your 1948 horn.

Excellent feedback - thanks. I have one set that came w/ the car, and another that I picked up on e-bay. The low note never worked on the original (since I had it) and the set from e-Bay was good for about 3 toots and the low note failed. There's several out there available for later years or for trucks that seem to look the same on the outside - - but your suggestion to transplant the inner components is a good one thanks. Bowtie

The wire can not be seen when the steering wheel is removed. It attached (soldered) to the upper bearing outter case...this assembly must be removed (pull out of) the column to see the wire.If you can't see the wire with bearing removed some one has already removed it or its slipped down in side. Can the wire be seen coming out of the column under the hood?

either way a new wire should be installed.

Styler-If its a 6 volt horn and your feeding it 12 volts they can get darn loud cool

Chev Nut the wire does come out of the column under the hood. Before the restoration I had bypassed the horn ring and had a switch wired to the wire coming out of the column under the hood...I would like to fix this once and for all,chef- chevy

It will be necessary to pull a new wire thru the column and install a new horn wire and a new upper bearing assembly.
