Well, I did it again...! Left the parking brake "Pulled On"...
And after a couple of months idle in the driveway, I just could bearly get it to roll...Can't even take my own advice...If your not going to drive it...Leave the parking brake off...Geez

Kevin,

I certainly know what you're talking about.

I wonder though if the return springs in the drums and the pull back for the parking brake are all at strength. Seems they should be strong enough to release any slight sticking of the shoes to the drums. Of course, some shoe materials may be more susceptible to sticking than others.

My question to others who have suffered this problem is"

a. Does the material of the shoes make any difference in them sticking when the park brake is left on?

b. Is there any evidence that the springs may have weakened over time and help cause the lack of release. That is, are they not pulling enough allow shoe release from the drum(s).

c. How long does it take to stick the shoes to the drums when the parking brake is left on. A week, a month? Longer? Extreemly variable depending upon moisture and other climate conditions?

d. Any difference in the release of shoes that are riveted than those that are bonded? If so, what has been the experience.

It's a neusence when parking to have to put the car in second or low to keep it from creeping, even on a slight incline.

I doubt the shoes are sticking to the drum. The only thing I can think of that would cause that is grease leaking in there. Sounds more like the cables sticking inside the housings to me. When was the last time you removed the cable / housing assemblies and lubed them?

Latigo,

Yes, that is another thing that could cause problems. Although, one would think that if the cable was loose enough to be pulled up that upon releasing it it would be loose enough to release. Two different sources of force are involved. Arm in setting the parking brake vs spring in releasing it, so that is an excellent response.
