I have a NOS S6 AC Oil Filter that I am preparing to put on the car. I have repainted the unit and applied the stickers from Chevs of the 40's. Painted the Yellow and Black, Factory Installed Version correct? The unit came with a cartridge #C115. I cannot find any reference to the C115. I can find P115 from AC. Is the P115 a replacement for the C115?

The modern number would br P-115-P indicates the filtering element is paper type. The Fram element is easier to find and usually at a lower cost. The Fram number is C4 and local tractor supply stores and Checkers have them on the shelf for about $6.00 to $7.00.

The AC element isn't made by AC either.

S-6 Oil Filter replacemenmt elements in our area is found at TSC = Tractor Supply Center. They sell C-4's. I highly recommend leaving those original 50 year old AC P-115 and AC C-115 oil filter elements on the shelf for "display only". No sense having an ancient filtering element disintegrate after all of these years in your car.

As I understand it the P (paper) 115's are the 'modern' replacement for the C-115's.

The P-115's are available anywhere "Delco" or "AC" parts / items are sold. To simplify things I just buy them a case at a time. And, that gets me a modest discount off purchasing them one-by-one.

As Toolman suggests, I don't think I'd put a 30-40 year old one in a cannister on one of my cars. Especially when 'brand new' ones are so readily available.

Bill.

EDIT by me: I'm sorry, I just noticed ChevGene had already 'explained' the whole thing about P115 (paper) etc.

Were not the original cartridges made of a fabric based material, cotton waste or something besides paper?

Yes-P paper--C cotton.

When paper was first used as a filtering media it was not always accepted.

Can you imagine how little oil passed thru a cotton stuffed filter at 5 or 10 pounds of oil pressure?

If you do find an AC brand they will be about twice the price of a Fram...and due to its limited sales AC no longer makes them. They just rebox a brand X.

Thanks everyone. I have a TSC about 3 miles from the house. I'll stop out this week. Toolman -I'll keep the original element on the shelf. Will be a real conversation piece.
