Need some advice on my 47 convert. The doors hit the striker plate in the wrong spot and wont close. Is there something I can do to align them? m not a body man, but thought maybe the spacers between the frame & body? Anyone have a suggestion? thanks broo

We really need some history. Is this a new restoration, ongoing problem, or something? Check the bolts/screws that fasten the door hinges to the door post. Has the striker plate come loose? Look for wear spots on the edges of the door or around the opening. New weatherstrip?

Hi Bro,
I am in the middle of a restoration and have just spent about 40 hours playing with the alignment of my 41 sedan doors. I think I can provide you pictures and some good advice. Give me a call. I will eventually followup this question with a posting in the Mr Goodwrench _ Technical Forum under the Forum Body- Sheet metal, Paint, and Wood.
Good luck, Mike 989-832-7634

The convertible bodies are very flexible. Just with the car being on a jack or lift can have a big effect on door alignment.

I have only done my aligning with the body on the frame, all body bolts fastened tightly to the frame, and the frame on the ground. I will post some pictures later today that should help with managing a large convertible door.
The first thing Boo needs to do is read and understand the info in his manual on door hinges. Door alignment is the single most difficult body adjustment.
Good luck, Mike

Take the strikers off the door jamb and close the doors. Are the body lines lining up and gaps even? That should tell you if the doors are high or low and which way they need to be adjusted. Like someone else said being on jack stands or a lift can cause just enough misalignment that the doors won't close so if it isn't I would make the adjustments with the car sitting on it's wheels.

yes, Ive noticed if I jack it up, things do change. The doors seem lower than body; there s a "hump" on the door that hits the striker plate which doesnt allow it to close. As far as the history, I just got the car, the body looks like its been off the frame, but I dont know for sure. Its been sitting for over 20 years Thanks for asll your help/ I will give you a call Mike

If its been apart you might want to see if it has the correct mounts on it,I have a mid 50s convertible and it does not have rubber mounts like the rest of the cars do and are solid metal and if someone stuck rubber parts in there you might have problems. If I want to be able to open and close the doors with the car off the ground I need to put the stands under the suspension to fool it like its sitting on the ground.

Right now the car is on skates. no front clip. the inner front fenders dont reach the their bolt holes. Looks like the fire wall needs to come forward for both reasons: door fit and the inner fenders
