I just rebuilt my 235 engine and installed a carburetor but engine would not run unless wide open. Upon inspection I found the little 5/32" pump check ball was missing. Since I didn't have one lying around I thought I'd find one in one of my old carburetors. I took TEN Carter carbs apart and found every one was missing this little ball; How is that possible? I know originally they were made of aluminum, have they all disintegrated or been lost? How important is this check ball?

Depending on the year of the carb. they did not all have the check balls in the same location. You will need to find out if you have a early low cover (1950-1951) or a later high cover.
Either one had a ball in the bottom of the accelerator pump well and one under the power piston. Which one do you think is missing and what year??? one is aluminum and one is steel.

CN; Please forgive me my stupidity; Looking at the diagram (in my dark shop) I mistook the Power Piston for the Pump Plunger assembly. No wonder I thought a check ball was missing; it was never there in the first place..........................back to the drawing board. I think these carburetors are haunted. I gone through six carbs and none of them seem to work correctly, can't be that difficult to clean one up.
