which main bearing half is top? my thoughts are the one with the most grooves is the top that fits into the block. this one has an X groove in it. the other bearing half only has a groove cut angling across it. tried to post picture but couldn't figure out how to put it in this box.

Based on what I have in my 1929, I have to agree

This is the bottom half of may FRONT main bearing

I just started working on mine and it is assembled with the double groove on the bottom.

Do you think I should swap them around ????

You may want to look close at your bearings I'm learning more as I go. My front bearing, the dow pin holes are different sizes, and so are the pins. The pin in the block is larger than the one in the cap.
The center main has an extra small oil hole on the side, the bearing has a hole that matches. So I think there is only one way that the bearings should go, that is with the X groove in the block and the single groove in the cap. I will try to post pictures of the small oil hole on the center main.
I can't the image to show up in this post so I'm gonna put it in members photos.

Is the center main the only main that has that extra small hole ???

I assume that is how the bearing is lubed. If the other 2 mains do not have this hole how are they lubed ???

As I mentioned earlier my center bearing is installed wrong I believe. I wonder if I can drop the crank enough to tap that insert around to remove it ???

I don't want to remove the crank at this time.

You will have to drop the crank down a goodly bit as the locating stud on the bearing must have room to rotate.
