Is anyone using an inline fuel filter before your carburetor? If so, how is it working? I had some trash this morning before I headed to a car show. Had to take the whole carb out and cleaned before I went. Made me late.

Yes. It's been in place for 10 years, changed once just because I figured it was best to do as preventative maintenance. Never have had a problem, at least so far.

Hi Camile,
Is there a glass bowl on your fuel pump? It is technically also an inline filter. I have used an inline filter at times, because my car came with one. I don't have one now because I replaced my gas tank and lines with new ones. The filter was just another area for a leak, and I have been taking my engine in and out over the last 8 years so it is a nuisance. Once I have finalized all my engine/body work I may return to using one. It maybe time to checkout your gas tank. When was the last time you drained it? How old is your gas tank? What type of sediment did you find in your carburetor bowl?
Good luck, Mike

What year is your car? 6 or 8 clinder? Your profile says it may be a 1957. A 1957 6 cylinder has a filter in the front of the carb, behind big nut that the fuel line fastens to. If it is an 8 Cyl. a 2 barrel and 4 barrel has different things and if a 4 Bbl. depends if it has a Carter or Rochester carb. Also 1955 and up has a sock type filter on the pick-up line in the gas tank.

Chevrolet did not offer an add-on gas filter in 1938. I would suggest installing an AC glass bowl filter right in front of the carbretor. They are sold by the Filling Station. Also clean ot the gas bowl on the fuel pump. You must have got a load of dirty gas.

I've got a 48 with the 216. Autozone stocks a Fram inline fuel filter for my car. I got one and installed it in front of my carb. Seems to work just fine.

Ollie X2, I like stopping the crud before it gets to the pump.

I wasn't clear earlier, the fuel filter on my truck is installed before the fuel pump. I decided to use one even though I had the tank inspected and cleaned. All was good, so there was no need for repair otherwise.

Camile,
I found an AC fuel filter element that is a perfect fit inside the glass bowl of my '36 fuel pump. It replaces the brass screen that in my experience was not an effective filter. With the brass screen the low speed jet would occasionally clog and I cleared it with compressed air.If you try some various filter elements you might have a similar success.
To me finding those unlisted parts substitutions is part of the fun of this hobby. Another example is a 1935-40 Ford fuel pump diaphragm that fits my '36 fuel pump and is available as a very inexpensive individual part from Ford restoration parts suppliers. Yet another example is 1-piece Delco ignition points that are listed for engines up to 1962 but also fit Delco distributors back at least to the 1930s and maybe farther back. Adding to the fun is "Experts" like the owner of The Filling Station (Steve) insisting to me that those later points do not fit the older distributors. Hmmm, they are abundant and inexpensive on ebay and they've been in my '36 distributor for years.

I agree. I put mine before the fuel pump to protect it. So the setup is: tank, filter, pump, then carb.

The reason the factory suggested location for the filter being mounted after the pump because the fuel pump pushes better after the pump than is sucks before the pump. also the glass bowl is out where it can be easily seen.

The 1962 points are a much improved version of the 1933 Master points. The 1962 235 points fit 1933-1934 Masters, all 1935-1941 and late 1948-1962. Same for the condensers. The condensers also fit the 1941-early 1948.

Thanks for posting that points application Gene. I used to get an online The Filling Station "newsletter" and when it announced that they were going to repop the 1930s 2-piece points I asked Steve why he wasn't repoppong the D105P point set. The answer was "It doesn't fit". I know it fits because I've been using it for years but what he does is none of my business.

A little tip on points, O'Reilly Auto Parts (if you have one locally) offers lifetime warranty on many of their BWD / Standard point sets. Most are under $12. Pertronix? $115 and a 2 year, 6 month warranty. For $115? That's a lot of sets of points

For $115? That's a lot of sets of points Absolutely! And, the Pertonix that I had lasted one week before it failed! The point set that it replaced was in the car for years without any problems.
