A friend of mine has 3 Chevy heaters, all 3 are the same. He said that they operate on GAS (wow). He does not know what year thinks mid 1930's or value. Any help?

My 48 has one in it. I haven't looked at it close. The gasoline line is disconnected on it. I won't use it. I have a regular heater to put in it when I get time. Luckly where I live, I don't need a heater as I only drive it on nice days. Don't know how the fan was controlled as there isn't a switch for it anywhere.

My Dad used to have one in his 47 Chev. The "advantage" was that you didn't have to wait for the engine to warm up before you got heat. I don't ever remember him having any trouble with it, although it probably ate into the car's gas mileage some. Southwind was the brand and it was made by Stewart Warner.

That is a South Wind gas heater. Seldom found installed in a chevrolet because the Chevrolet engine heated up fast and a hot water heater worked OK. They were advertised as giving heat in 60 seconds.
They were usually found in Fords because for some reason the hot water heater in a flat heead Ford did not heat well in cold weather. They were popular from the late '30's till about 1948. After that time most modern cars had good heaters that brought in fresh air which prevented the windows from steaming up amoung other things.
The 1960 Corvair had a version of a gas heater. Problem was in winter the heater used as much
gas as the engine.
