A question for the '33 experts; I have a friend with a '33 Master with no motor. I have a good '51 216ci that I would donate as a temp replacement if it's feasible to do without modification to the vehicle. Is this even doable?

Thanks for your advice,

What sort of modifications would be required? Would they be easily converted back to original when the correct engine was available?

Thanks,

Seems like an awful lot of extra work, to do the job twice. Why not spend that energy of the first engine installation in finding the correct engine up front, and just doing it once? I'm not complaining, I don't have to do the work - just saying it seems like a ton of work to take it all back apart later and do over. 1933 engines are out there.

A 1937 Chevy pickup bell housing will bolt up to a 1933 master engine. I did it back before I found the correct '33 engine. I don't know about other years.

No question, if this car was on its way to a full restoration, the logical approach would be to take a correct engine to the machine shop and have it completely rebuilt while the body and frame were being refurbished. However, that's not happening at this point.

My intent was to perhaps get another on the road and preserve it for the time when that could be the goal rather than deteriorating in obscurity.

Thanks for the suggestions,

There are a lot of '33 engines out there. Some are pulled because they are making hot rods out of them. I would think that you could check out the local "Hot Rod" shopsin your area to see if they got one setting. Then there is the VCCA member who may have one on tap. Checking the ads in the Generator and Distributor (Club Mag.) would be another source (if you are a member). Cost may be cheaper than you think!

Keeping in mind that this is not my vehicle nor do I have a great deal of input into what happens to it ultimately, I'm trying to find a way to keep it from ending up with a "scrapper" or deteriorating further.

My feeling is that if I can somehow help get it on the road again, the owner's interest might be rekindled or someone might be willing to take it back to an appropriate, original level.

The fact that I have a good '51 216ci that I have no plans for made me consider donating it to accomplish something positive.

However, without knowing what would be involved in this change out, I'm hesitant to proceed. I was in hopes that someone had done this sort of swap that would share the process for my consideration.

Thanks in advance,

you need a bell housing from a truck. It will fit the engine and '33 transmission. Just be sure it is the same dimension front to back as the '33 so you don't have to modify the firewall. The 216 is shorter so you will have to fabricate a plate to mount the front motor mounts. Side mounts will have to be fabricated attaching the bell housing to the cross member. The clutch linkage will have to be modified assuming you will use the '51 clutch, fork, and throughout bearing. Cooling may be a problem because of the smaller radiator. There are other lesser modifications, hoses, wiring etc. If you have lots of time and don't care that the VCCA isn't into such modifications go ahead. You will have a car that will beat any '50 Chevy at the stoplight until the transmission fails. I know, I did it once about 60 years ago.

Thanks for the run down on the exchange. That's really what I was looking for. Sounds like if you're careful and move along slowly, it can be fairly simple and not require any alteration to the vehicle for future restoration potential.

Up until your comments, I was beginning to feel like the time I asked for directions to "Starbucks" and everyone told me I should go to "Dairy Queen"!

Thanks again for your input,

I was backwards on my previous post the pickup bell house will bolt to the 33 transmission, not the 33 engine. I was thinking backwards. Just call it a senior moment! blush
