They used Firestone,Goodrich and US Royal (Uniroyal today)

The 15" Goodrich had "low pressure" on the side wall-the 16" I believe just said "silvertown"

The 15" Firestone had "Super Baloon" and the 16" DeLuxe Champion.

The 15" US Royal had "Air Ride" the 16" "DeLuxe"

In the modern replacements the Goodrich and Firestone have the same tread design as in 1948.
US Royal not reproduced in 16" and their 15" has a later tread design.

I have both brands ,Firestone and Goodrich, on my cars and prefer the Goodrich as the white walls stay whiter.

Since I'm longer the "owner" of a 1948 Chevrolet ( or is that the old Chevies own us ? ), what are the original tire brands for 1940 Chevrolets? Are there any manufacturers that reproduce the 16" tires with correct tread design?

In 1940 they used the US Royal "DeLuxe" and the BF goodrich Silvertown. The US Royal had the same block tread design from 1940-mid-1948.In mid 1948 it became the "finer" block design like that all the "Air Rides" used. That design continued to mid-1954 when the new US Royal "8" was introduced.

The Goodrich tread design was used from 1938-42 only - was changed completely in 1946 and that design used up thru 1954.

Nothing close is made today for the 1940 but the Firestone would be correct appearing for that period as their saw tooth desigh was new for 1940 - although the brand was not used on GM at that time.

Good picture of BFG on page 23 of Illustrated Pictorial Chevrolet History....US on page 20.
