Hello all--
Getting ready to pull the oval part of the dash that has the gauges in it. The paint is not original.

Anyone know what color it was?
My sedan is dark green with the light green trim.
I understand that it also had a texture?

I picked up a gauge reface kit from the FS. Going to install those.
Any advice?

There is currently a dash light on the rear of the gauge cluster that lights up the amp meter, oil pressure and the speedo.
How is the heat gauge supposed to be lit up?

Thanks,
Dale

Dale, the instrument panel was painted using "wrinkle paint"- a product which wrinkles up as it dries. The color was a sort of silverfish gray and all '29 cars had the same color. I have been unable to find wrinkle paint in the gray color, so I've painted the panel using black wrinkle paint (available in car parts stores -- used on some modern valve covers, etc) and then overlaying it with the correct gray. Worked out fine.

There is only one light bulb for all the instruments and as I remember it, they all have a slit in the side to admit light, covered with a strip of green celluloid. Not very even distribution of the light, but "good enough", I guess. ok

Hope that helps.

All the Best,

Chip

Chip: I have done the exact same thing on several 1929 instrument panel inserts, and, you are right, it works great!

Thanks very much for the replies gentlemen!!

My heat indicator gets no light whatsoever. That will be cured for sure.

Any idea what rattle can color would be close to to the correct gray?

Thanks
Dale
