Hi, I'm having trouble with my 3100 pickup. It's a 1952 all stock with three speed column shift. The second gear keeps popping out when I drive. The lever falls down into neutral and I have to engage it again. Anyone got an idea on what may cause this?

Howdy NicholasM..........If the gear pops under power, then the bushing on 2nd in the transmission is likely worn out, on the other hand, if it falls out when you are deaccelerating (foot off the gas pedal) then the 2nd gear detent spring is likely broken or worn out :)

I have had the same problems for years, just falls into neutral from second when coasting..Tranny has been re-built 2 times and I do not think it is the rod adjustment, although could be wrong

Could be an alignment issue. It has been talked about in the past. The transmission input is not square with the crankshaft. The service manual talks about checking bellhousing alignment.

Hi Terry, I havent kept statistics, but if I recall it correctly it is most often under acceleration and when driving at constant speed on second for example in a roundabout.

Hi Don. OK, then I have to check the alignment. Not an all easy task ;-)

Howdy Nicholas...It sounds like the bearing(bushing) is wearing on 2nd. What happens then is that the gear doesn't stay lined up under load and will kick it out of gear. It doesn't really hurt the transmission, except it won't stay gear, but as it wears it'll bust knuckles if their in the way.

Could be as minor as the little energizing spring on 2nd gear is weak, rear or front bearing or sync. drum......or the roller bearings where the main drive gear and main shaft mate together. Disassembly of the transmission would be necessary to determine for sure.

Dad had 6 Chevrolet trucks in his business during the 1950's. This problem did come up. They had to pull the transmission and tear it down to see what was the cause.
