Does anyone know the correct diameter of the canister for a 48 oil filter? The original one on my 48 measures 5" on the filter I received from Chevs of the 40's the gasket I received with the filter was 4 1/2". Is there a site some where that could be used to check this out?

Thanks,

It depends on what make and model oil filter was installed. The car came with no filter from the factory. It could have been a factory installed as an option or the dealer could have installed an AC.(same filter-different color). The AC filter canister be 5" in diameter and about 7" tall including the "cone" on the bottom of the canister. The correct moder AC brand number for the element is P115 and C4 in Fram. The element will be about an inch smalller in diameter.I buy the Frams locally for about $6.00 and the gasket that comes with it is too small so I use the old one with no problem.
There were many other brands of oil filter installation kits made for Chevrolets so the correct element would depend on what filter was installed on the car.

I didn't realize the filters were not factory installed. Mine is an AC it was yellow, my old gasket is shot so I'll make a new one. One other question: the oil enters filter through the side via line from the distributor on the side of block, right? Then goes back to crankcase via hose on the center bottom of filter, is this right or do I have it backwards?

Thanks,

The oil returns thru the bottom. The AC filters were yellow and black thru 1949.The 1950 and up were orange and blue.Basically the same filter.

I have a 52 216, original filter to my knowledge it is black and orange, I also have a 1952 PG 235 with what I was told is the original filter, it is blue. The diameter and the height appear to be different from the filter on the 216. I use NAPA filters on the 216, I tried to cross the NAPA number with a glitter shop filter number and got it home, it was to tall and the gasket was to small for the cannister. Just some added confusion to the subject. I know that one is Fram the other probably AC.

Black and orange is the common color for a fram.It is also slightly smaller. The Fram element number is C3 and is on every parts house shelf. It was also factory on many makes of cars and tractors and industrial engines. The C3 element will fit into the AC can OK - will just look undersized but will function OK.

I use a NAPA filter cartrige # 1100 in the filter on my 1954 235 engine. The seal measures 5". I don't know if it is the same for the other years but you may want to check.
