Good morning from other side of the atlantic ocean...
am in need of metering rod needle for "lean" mixture (called 69-43 in the repair shop book) for the carter W1 carburetor of my 1940 special deluxe. Long ago I wrote a good oldfashioned letter to a recommended adress: Doyle's carburetor shop Doyle Stokes 108 Lamar dr. Bonaire BA 31005 Georgia, USA. Did write a good old letter (yes, from paper, with postal stamps on it) because I could not find any website or email. A pal of mine here in germany bought a complete W1 there for a fair price in 2009.
Now I wait for an answer to my letter since august.
Does anybody know anything about that shop? Maybe it does not exist anymore?
Regards Stefangermany

You might visit stovebolt.com and look for a member using the handle "carbking". He has a web site and he's very helpful & knowledgeable with carb issues on the site.

Doyle rebuilt one of my carbs about 18 months ago. I was very pleased.

chipper Contact Chipper and find out if he might have what you need. If not I will call Doyle for you. Doyle lives about 100 miles from me. I do know he has had some health issues lately. Doyle's # 1-478-922-3605, best time to reach him is 7-8:00P.M. eastern time. or Sunday after church 2:00P.M. on.

Hi ruscar, hi Chipper,
thanks for help.
Now I have some paths to follow.
I'll try to call Doyle too. For me it is just to calculate I am on other side of that planet and I must try to dig out my mathematic basics to find the right moment to call. I guess it should be at late evening here in germany to arrive my call at early afternoon in GA. During last week I had to work very hard and to do a phone call in a foreign language when beeing exhausted and tired after work is not a good idea. But any day I will get it. Vintage car season is over here now, there will be enough month in front to get that needle idea done and out of my mind before next spring.
Regards Stefan it should be about 4:00 pm at Doyles place now, means it is 10:00 PM here in germany if I did calculate everything right after my 2nd bavarian beer...
To get Doyle at 7:00 or 8:00 PM it is 01:00 or 02:00 AM at night here. Sounds not easy...to call at my deepest possible sleep

Stefan, after reading your post I called Doyle, as I said I would. He told me he did remember your letter. He also said he (his wife) answered with a e-mail the next day. He said he thought it strange he never heard back form you. Anyway he is going to try and send you another e-mail. I gave him the one you have in your profile. I tried to get his e-mail but he did not know it as his wife does the pc stuff. She was not at home when I called. It is now 5:00 P. M. here in Georgia. We are 6 hours behind you , I think.
He tried to explain to me about the rod. Said something about it being a matched set. Rod and seat. And wasn't sure which W-1 you had.
Anyway, you should receive a e-mail from him in the next day or so. If not, post here and I will try to help some more.
Note, if you do call, his hearing is not so good. Will have to repeat most everything. He is also a TALKER, but a nice guy.

Hello ruscar,
thanks for all your help. Did check my email just now and got an email by Doyle. First surprise is he told me my carb might be a 1949 W 1 in my 1940 car. There is nothing to read on my carb because it was sandblasted heavily by anybody in past and all stamped numbers and/or tags got lost. But I guess I am on the right path now. Indeed it makes sense that meteting rod and seat must be a seat to match. maybe mine is not a matching set. If I shut down the motor it needs a long restart period because the loat chamber runs empty. seems the needle is too thin for the seat.
But I think I am in good hands now at Doyle's shop
Will post here if there are news.
Regards Stefangermany
Sorry, mybe there is mistyping above, I am in hurry to work

If it is a 1949 Carb. it will have the feature that if the choke is pulled out the idle speed will automatically increase. Only year to have this. Also a 1949 Carb. is jetted much leaner than the 1939-1940 carb....it caused a slight bucking or surging at a steady 50 MPH or so on my 1939.
