The Belt Finishing Panel was painted Veldt Gray with a Walnut Inlay Okay, after doing some research I was able to determine that the "Belt Finishing Panel" that was painted Veldt Gray with a Walnut Inlay on the Convertible Landau, is actually the bottom vertical piece of the lower window garnish moulding. According to the 1929 Chevrolet literature, all of the window garnish mouldings on the Convertible Landau were painted, including the lower window garnish mouldings, but there was a Walnut grained inlay transfer in the center face of the vertical bottom piece of the lower window garnish mouldings which Chevrolet called the "Window Belt Finishing Panel". I have some photos of an all original 1929 Convertible Landau that was found in a barn where it had sat for many, many years and this could be the most original Convertible Landau in the country. The instrument panel on the car is painted two tone, which matches the Chevrolet paint specifications for the Convertible Landau. The bottom vertical piece of the lower window garnish moulding is also painted with a Walnut inlay transfer in the center face of garnish moulding that is against the mohair trimmed door panel. I have numerous photos of 1929 Convertible Landaus....manufactured both early in the year and late in the year, and they all have painted instrument panels.

That's clear as mud to me. I am not sure. There is 4 pieces of window garnish mouldings: top, bottom, and two sides. Is there a indent or something where this wood grain goes?

The lower window moulding on the Convertible Landau consists of two pieces. One piece goes horizontally along the bottom edge of the window (it is called the lower window garnish moulding) and the other piece (Chevrolet calls it a Belt Finishing Panel) goes vertically against the door panel and mates with the lower window garnish moulding. The Walnut wood grained inlay is a transfer that is flush on the face of the Belt Finishing Panel. It will be obvious when you look at the interior portion of the door on a Convertible Landau.

JD, This makes sense and I can follow what you are saying. I found a 29 Laudau five years ago that had been sitting in a barn for 45 years. Unfortunately the owner previous to the person I bought the car from had painted all the window garnishes white. I could not see any wood grain because the vertical belt too had been painted. The dash was probably two tone as you said and there is an indentation which would be conducive to the color change. The instrument panel was painted the veldt color but it had a wood grain pattern in the paint but again it was the veldt color. Thanks for this information. Very good. If you have pictures of the one you are referring to I would greatly appreciate being able to see them.

On the 29 Landau there are five pieces of "garnishment" for each window. The four pieces that frame the window and the "ornate" piece that is below the lower piece on the window frame. That is the piece JD has correctly referred to as the Belt Finishing Panel. There is no indentation on the lower pieces. It is curved on the bottom of the piece and looks like an upside down bell shape.

I was surprised to hear all garnish moldings on a 31 cabriolet were wood grained mahogany. I'm just beginning to work on a 31 Cabriolet Standard. Today I was able to look closely at the passenger side garnish molding (still looking for the driver's side). The car appears to be an original Standard model (vs Deluxe) that has survived and been sitting 45-50yrs. The molding's finished top surface appeared to be a black paint until I found a very small spot of grain where the molding turns under along the bottom edge. I compared it to a grained garnish molding for a 31 Special sedan. Hard to be sure but the mahogany color looks like it may be different? Is the graining and color on a 31 Cabriolet the same as a 31 Special Sedan. Not sure if this should be another thread...always appreciate any help...

You would look on another 1929 Convertible Landau for the location of the wood grain and the type of wood grain, and then have a local print/decal shop make some decals. There are lots of those cars around so it should not be problem to locate one to use as a sample.
