I have a fully restored 1954 Chevy BelAir that needs a new battery. I want to get an exact replica, if possible. I found this one on Bob's:
http://www.bobschevytrucks.com/1940-1954-chevy-authentic-delco-battery-group1-12volt-delco6g1.html

and this one at Antique Auto battery: http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/batteries/gm/G1-2-3-Delco.html

Neither one looks exactly like the Delco illustrated in the owner's manual. Specifically, the one in the owner's manual shows a round ring around "Delco" logo, with no other lettering around it. Furthermore, the metal ties on the top appear to be much shorter than the ones currently offered for sale.

Is the battery shown in the owner's manual just illustrative (not accurate)? Conversely, are the two batteries currently available historically accurate? Finally, are there other sources that I just didn't find?

Restoration Battery makes this Chevrolet logo battery, not sure how it matches the one in your manual.

The battery that says Delco on the side is most correct for a 1954 and would be OK for VCCA judging.....the one with the Chevrolet Bow-Tie logo would be most correct for the pre-war years.
Neither are exact and the yelow filler caps didn't come along til 1956.

Where did you get the battery with the Delco circle? That matches what is shown in the manual.

Are there any judging deductions for the Restoration batteries that are maintenance free?

Here's picture of the battery in the manual:

If this is the same "Antique Battery" that was previously located in Hudson, Ohio area, I should share my experience with you.
I purchased a "back in the day battery" from them, for my black 1951 Chevy.
Being that I was living in Cleveland, Ohio at the time, I picked up the battery at their facility, to avoid any possible shipping damage.
The battery looked look, looked original to the car, was very pleased with it.
I used the battery during the summer cruise months, then put the car to bed, for winter storage.
I utilize a practice of starting my "stored car" every 3 or 4 weeks, during the winter months. In Ohio, that "stored time" extended from November to mid April.
I own a 6 volt "battery tender", the little green colored charger. It was on the battery, during those months.
Spring came, the battery was dead, would not take a charge. I took the battery back to Antique Battery, they would not honor their warranty, 9 months after initial purchase.
Battery was taken to a back room for "inspection".
Lady counter person said battery was sulfated, end of story, from her perspective. She handed me a pre printed note, telling of battery sulfation.
Keep in mind, battery tender was in use, during stored months.
In spite of my request, I was not able or offered to speak to manager/owner type of individual. Two follow up letters, which I sent were not answered.
Moving on, I purchased a "non original looking battery" from another source 5 years ago. I use the same battery tender, the 5 year old battery is still with me today.
