The 1949-1952 came from the factory with two vents and two vent cables and knobs. When the Deluxe Air Flow heater was installed it took the place of the right vent intake tube, etc. so the vent was eleminated. If the heater temperature valve is working correctly you can get fresh cool air through the heater.
The early 1949 had a lot of "design flaws"....many were corrected by mid year so if the car had the outside hood release we always figured it was a "good" 1949.
The 1949 and 1950 service news covers most of the problems and some are in the yellow service buletins.

You can read what owners thought of their new 1949 Chevrolet in Floyd Clymers owner survey. Go to old car manual project and see 1949 Chevrolet owner investigation or something like that.

I kind of wondered why there wasn't a vent on the right side of my 51. Now I know, thanks Gene

The one I had in High School had the pull type hood opener. The one I have now has the outside release. I remember you telling me to look for that when I was dealing on it. Thanks again, Gene.

An "I remember" story for you! My dad (Brewster's grandfather) was the shop foreman at a large Chev dealer in the late '40's and early '50's. As such, they let him have a new car to drive, with the condition that he keep it clean so that it could be used as a demonstrator during the day. So, he received a brand new '49 to drive when they came out. The first day he came home in a driving rainstorm, he was soaked from the knees down. Back went the '49 to the dealer - he took back the Fleetline he had turned in and drove it for another year.
