I just rebuilt my transmission. After installing it and ready for a test drive, at a dead stop, I push in the clutch and when I try to shift- it grinds horribly so I stop trying to shift. If I shift into first while the car is off I can get the car to back in and out of the garage but I'm hesitant to take it for a spin because I can't shift into 1st or reverse at a dead stop while the car is running.

What did I do wrong here?

Check the through bearing it may be out of position, this is a clutch problem.

Clutch adjustment or the T.O. bearing is in backwards.

I think it might be out of adjustment because there is a lot of play in the pedal. I'll adjust it and try it out.

As far as the t.o bearing I have the wider side against the spring fingers.

I made the adjustment to get the play out of the pedal and actually ran out of adjustment to get the play out but the grinding is still there. The t.o bearing is new and seems to be the correct one and installed properly.

Any more tips?

Correct T.O. bearing is 1 7/8"
incorrect T.O. bearing is 1 9/32" long...used with coil spring lever type pressure plate on 8 Cyl cars ad large trucks.
