Hi,
I have found a chassis number stamped in the chassis, it is at the front right hand side, has suffered from corrosion but there is still enough to make out the letters and numbers.

The car is Chevvy International tourer dated 1929, shipped to Australia in knock down, then bodied by Holden.
I have the car in England where it's being put right by myself, the chassis number was a missing link for me to get it registered for the road until I discovered it today.

Chassis No. NINVAAA292-01 The last A was very corroded, could be something else.
The hyphen (-) between 2 & 01 is a zero on its side.
Underneath the chassis No is a large S about an inch high with a circle around it.

If anyone can decipher this information, I would be really grateful to know what it means, what factory it came from etc.

Chevrolets made in the USA did not have a car serial number stamped on the frame but they did have an "S" with a circle around it stamped in several locations on the frame.

Hopefully someone can decipher the number that is on your frame.

Sorry I can't provide much incite on the frame number. I am thinking it is there to provide a means to identify the frame so it can be mated to the correct body parts.

I now have a good contact in Australia on the case, thanks for your input. As these numbers and letters are not stamped in very deep as on other old cars I have, my thinking is heading towards Australian GM plants putting them on.

Original chassis numbers in Australia were a Letter like B,S,M,P and then a 4 digit number. The numbers quoted look like a later issued Vin number by a motor registry here in Australia.

The chassis number was stamped into the brass plate attached to the seat frame.
I believe that 1928 and 1929 had the number stamped into the rear body rail located on the top surface , and cannot be seen with the body on the chassis.

Jack,
I have a blank Australian chassis plate which I can now fill in which will satisfy the registration authorities, with the numbers punched into the chassis. It would be interesting to find out what the letters and numbers mean though.
Cheers.

As Jack mentioned the Australian Built Chevrolets had a prefix and 4 Numerical Digits stamped onto a Brass Plate which listed the GM Manufacturing Plant of origin in the relevant state ..... M = Melbourne ( Victoria ) , S = Sydney ( New South Wales , B = Brisbane ( Queensland ) , P = Perth ( Western Australia ).
