I hope I picked the right spot for this question. My son has an older Mercedes (1967) that needs the seat belts refurbished. I know this is a Chevy Chat Site, but I also know many members have other makes of autos and may have first hand experience in this area. Any recommendation on where to send them? I hate to just pick one off the internet.
Thanks in advance,
Richard

The seat belt sites on e-bay are good for comparison shopping. all hot-rod shops carry some. I don't believe cadillac has changed that much in 45 years. Nylon quality makes the difference.

I don't know what condition your sons belts are in, but if the hardware is good the fabric may be restorable. If the fabric is not frayed, the belts can be scrubbed with detergent, rinsed well and dried. Your parts house will have upholstery dye mixed in with their spray paints to bring the color back. I've done it several times.

Hi Richard,

I suspected that almost 50 years with the original belts could mean deterioration with age so I Googled this topic. As I suspected this can/is the case. I would not recondition the belt material but rather professionally replace it from a company certified for this type of work. All belts in the USA must meet Federal Safety Standards. Here are two links to look at.

The second link relates mostly to installing belts in our old Chevies that never came with them. But if you inquire for info on a Chevy site we are going to want to help our Chevy guys too.

Good Luck, Mike

Chevrolet cautioned against having seat belts cleaned or reused if beginning to fray. I would suspect there are places that would install new webing to the old hardware.

Great info. Thank you for the research. I should of been more specific. When I asked about restoration, I was inquiring about a company that would replace the webbing and fix the retractors, etc.

Fraying is the deciding factor on whether to reuse the belts.

Here is a company that restores Seat Belts. I have seen their products and have been pleased with their results. They set up at a lot of Swap Meets, they also have a web-site.
