So I trying to remount my ignition switch after rewiring but I have to pull the guts out again to get the chrome key holder part through the dash hole. It has the two small paper clip size holes on the side next to the chrome key slot. I poked one then the other then both at the same time, with the key turned on and not and I can't seem to get it to pop off? Thoughts? Directions?

If it has two holes it is a replacement switch - but still a GM. When the switch is on (key slot straight up and down) the lower hole should be the one to put the paper clip into. You should feel the plunger depresss a little. If it dosen't work it may be stuck due to old age. Then lubricate it with WD40 and let it sit for a day.
I forgot to mention the switch (cylinder) must be in the locked poition and that is all the way in the counter clockwise position. If you peek in between the cylinder and switch you can see the plunger when the switch is out of the dash.

As stated by Junkyard Dog, one key fits all. This is from the 1951 Owners Manual. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyowner/51om10.htm

The 1948 and up had one key. around 1964 they went back to the two key system The one key models have the ignition switch that locks when turned counter clock wise and can be turned without the key in the clockwise position and is on when straight up and down.

Have an after market switch similar to one described. Vertical is key removal and insert. Counter clockwise position can be reached without the key and on position is clockwise with key inserted. Messed with trying to remove cylinder with no luck after about an hour trying many combinations - key inserted, key removed, checking for plunger in all key positions. Finally achieved success with key inserted turned clockwise inserted the paperclip into bottom, hole felt plunger and pushed clip down, turned further clockwise until clip stopped, then turned slowly removed clip, and cylinder turned further clockwise. Could not get cylinder to come until I used my finger nails in the space between the cylinder and the housing and pulling away from the housing. Finally had cylinder in my hand.

Your experience would have additional value to others, if you would name the "aftermarket switch". It would be my thought aftermarket companies may utilize various procedures, the name may assist others who are doing the same thing, as you performed.
