I have been looking to upgrade my 40 chevy to an inserted later model engine. Found one which had valve cover held on with the four screws and oil fill at front of cover. What I need help with is determining what cu the engine is. The block serial number is B52 848 850. Can any one help to identify this engine? Help will be appreciated. Thanks

Serial # is on a flat just to the left of distributor as you stand facing the distributor side of engine. If the B 5 2 is the casting #, that would indicate a cast date of February 5th of 1962 which would be a 62 engine cid 235.

If the oil filler is on the front of the valve cover at least the cover is 1958 or older.
Yes, get the numbers stamped into the ledge just behind the distributor.

Finally got the engine # and head casting #'s. Engine B52 84885C Head casting # 3696850 GM3. The engine has the 3 triangular raised castings where the motor mount would go but they do not appear to be drilled to threaded. With this additional maybe some can give me more information. Is the block pre-insert with a later head or it this engine a just a rabbit pounder ?
