Probably not the pump. Generally the only problem pumps present leaking. Probably the radiator. Or possibly: a. Cracked head or block b. Leaking head gasket Check the radiator first. Fill the radiator up with the bottom hose off. Hold your and over the bottom outlet until full. Quickly remove you hand from the outlet and water should shoot out about 4-6 inches and immediately empty and no sucking sound. If there is only a 1-3 inch hight and it takes a while to empty and some sucking sounds from the top, then you know the some flues are stopped up or some degree of being plugged. Thus the cause of the problem. You can back/reverse flush for temporary help but the radiator probably needs rodding. Or a replacement radiator or core. Good luck, Charlie

The description of the overheating problem is consistent with exhaust getting into the coolant. Auto parts stores have a test kit to detect exhaust gas (CO2) in the cooling system. I would recommend that be used before other more drastic action is taken.

If it takes a while to overheat when driving at higher speeds then it would tend to be radiator. If it overheats quickly at road speed then more likely head gasket like Chipper said.

Was the head gasket replace because it was leaking? When the head was off was the mating surface checked to make sure it was flat and was the head magnafluxed for cracks?
