I have a 47 2 door sedan with a 3 speed manual transmission . When I removed the transmission I noticed that the input shaft had a little movement side to side and up and down about maybe 1/4 inch or so. I don't ever remember any input shaft having any movement. Any ideas. I also have a sound which appears is comeing from around the trans area when the motor is under load.Any help or Ideas . Thanks Mark 47

Thanks chef .When I took the transmission out I slid the yoke back and then lifted the trans up and out the top. I have never removed the rear end.

You will probably need to pull the front bearing retainer houseing ( that is the part the throw out bearing rides on), drive out the bearing, as shown in the repair manual, then check for either a badly worn bearing or shaft or probably the bearing retainer. The Transmission should be torn down and checked for worn parts while it is out.

Adjustment on the torque tube? The drive shaft is splined and the torque tube ball housing slides over the torque tube houseing. The normal way of pulling the transmission without removeing the engine or even when it is removed attached to the engine is to loosen the seal nut on the rear of the torque ball enough to slide the ball back after removeing the cap screws that attach it to the u joint housing, enough to part the U joint by removeing the cap screws that hold the rear and front halves of the u joint then just dropping the torque tube down far enough to pull the unbolted transmission out of the bell bousing and the clutch.
