Both the Champion W89D and the Autolite 3077 are "hot" plugs. According to my chart the Champion is a slightly hotter plug but not much.

I have used both the Champion W89D and Autolite 3077 plugs. Seem to be about the same in my '28 Chevys.

Thank's to both of you. I have a 1928 1 ton and it has AC 76S plugs and, being me, I would like a spare set. I've search all over for the 76S to no avail, but I found W89D's and they have the reach for the 171 chevy. I suspect that they are just a little hotter than the 76S so we'll have to adjust for that, but that shouldn't be a problem....Once again thanks..Terry

AC78S is also a very good plug for the 1928.

The AC76S is a medium range plug with the AC78S slightly hotter. They are about level with the Autolite 3076, all being mid range plugs. The Champion equivalent is about W14 and W16. Both the Champion W89D and Autolite 3077 are much hotter. Try and report.

Howdy Terry.....The AC76S plugs that are in the 171 are working pretty good but, I think trying the W89D would be fun to do. They're about $15.00 each but, it's only a four cyl so it's not a deal breaker and I have nothing better to do anyway.

Hi Guys,

I run 3077's in my 28 and have done so for the last few years. As they are a hotter plug, to safeguard the inners, and to lower the temp of the combustion I run a litre of diesel per tank of gas. It does not smoke or smell, and is a great upper cylinder lubricant. The 3077's made a different in power on the hills over the W14's and a noticeable difference between advance and retard, but they demand perfect timing.

Cheers

Ray

Howdy Ray...The plugs will likely take a week or two to get here. I think I'll need to advance the timing a couple of degrees. The diesel sounds like a good idea, here it's mostly kerosene, and it might slow the combustion a bit which I don't think would hurt much and as long as it's not going to mess up the vacuum tank, a litre in 10 gallons isn't going to hurt anything. We have some hills here and I'm curious to see if there's a difference...

Hi Terry,

Kerosene should do the same job, combustion temperature wise as diesel, but being a bit thinner you may not get the same upper cylinder lubricant properties. On the 2 Chev 4's I have converted to 3077's, what was a good fully advanced setting for the shorter plug gave a miss under load, mainly up hills. All it took on both 28's was backing off the fully advanced by a pencil line thickness, between 1/16 to 1/8 inch. After that they ran fine. Beware though, don't think the miss is a fuel problem, which it seems like. I run my 77's at 30 thou.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Ray

Good luck

Ray

Howdy...The plugs came in yesterday so I went in and got them today. I regaped them to .030 , then threaded them in and retarded the timing a bit and took it for a ride. It started fine and run alright but I didn't notice any difference on the hill in front of our yard. Since I got the 28 I've not adjusted the timing( except the retarding I just did) so I loosen off and did it by ear. I have hill that I can't get up except in second gear, a good test, I went up that hill in 3rd gear without a" by your leave", those W89D's are good plugs. Now, some day I'll take for a ride and see if it is going to heat up on me, Thanks

Terry

Hi Terry,

The majority of people who convert to 3077's of W89D's are usually more than happy with the result.

Cheers

Thanks...Playing with that old chevy is fun to do....Since then I've developed a fuel leak on the carb, I'm sure that it's because of the new plugs-it's pouting..lol...Terry
