Hi guys.

Inside the engine compartment on the steering column there is a small cannister looking item, that has a clamp on both ends and is inserted in-line on the steering shaft.

It's about 4" long and appears to be a u-joint/coupler thing. It has a rubber cover, is filled with grease and has a large snap-style ring hold the end on.

Mine seems to have about a 1/2" of slop in it and I'm trying to get a replacment part, but have not seen anything in pictures listed from the major suppliers. Since I don't know the technical name for it, that doesn't help.

Any input, such as what it's called, and who might have one would be very helpful.

Thanks to all,

Bobalouie

It is called a coupling. It connects the upper shaft to the lower shaft. To be specific it is the center coupler and fits 1958-1964 cars except with tilt column.
There is also a lower coupler. It has the heavy rubber "thing" 'kind of a disc, bolted or riveted in the center. Also called a flexible coupling.

At times they are called "rag joints'. Kinda like the Do-Hickey.

The rag joint was the lower joint with the rubber disc, etc.
He needs the upper (center) coupling that more or less telescopes to compensate for the frame movement because the steering gear is bolted to the frame horn way up front.

Hey Chevgene, found a comapny in Australia of all places called "Rare Spares", that carries a rebuild kit, ISRK1, that looks perfect. Runs $76, plus shipping so we'll see. As you probably know, the Chevy's went under a different brand name there, but the kit looks great and contains an extra pressure piece to keep the tabs firmly in place.

Check out http://rareparts.com/ in California. They claim to be able to come up with almost any steering or suspension part ever made in the USA.

Cheers, Dean

That did not have that part, unfortunately. However, another member has emailed me that he does, so I'm good to go.

Thanks to all,
