I have a 48 chevy fleetmaster coupe. It is a great driving car except that there is a lot of wind noise eminating from the rear of the car - buffeting noise. It seems to be coming from outside as if it was in the area of the rear window. It is affected by wind speed and direction. Is this common for this year due to design - or might I be missing some insulation, perhaps behind the headliner. The rest of the car is quiet except for a slight leak around the front of the right door.

This does not sound common to me.Most wind noise in older cars originates from the windshield and front vent window areas.
All that was above the headliner in 1948 was a black tarpaper like material cemented to the roof. Its function was insulation and some sound deadning but not for wind noise.
Rear quarter window sealing strips (if it has the sliding windows) would be the only thing that comes to mind.Quess that I would need to ride in the car to get a better idea.

When the above post was done I was thinking that you mean when the windows are closed. If this occurs with the windows open it may be just air turbulence-or air trapped in the rear compartment. On my 2 door and 4 door I roll down the rear windows a little to help eleminate this,

Jim , I guess you use your radio to counter extra unexplained noises like I do? if it don't work maybe he needs a bigger speaker!

Right MrMack! For instance, my 63 convertibe has all kinds of squeaks and rattles. So I upgraded to a 100 watt Custom Audio stereo!
