When you say that you purchased a used 1947 radio, are we to assume that it is a 1947 Chevrolet radio? If so, why wouldn't the radio be negative ground?

The best solution to your problem is to have your radio restored and converted to 12-volts. The system of using a resistor for dropping the voltage to 6-volts is not a proper method.

I just happen to know a fellow who does that type work.

Ray, since you are a radio mechanic is there a practial way to convert a 12 volt CB to six volts DC, other than carrying a 12 volt battery in the car??

Radio Shack and others have offered a power supply unit that stepped up the DC voltage for just that purpose. Not aware that anyone is still producing such an animal. I do see them at swap meets on occasion.

Chevy's of the 40's seems to have the best selection. Go to their site at parts123.com and do a search on "volt". 12-6. Everything from basic resistors($2) for gauges to a solid state unit($67.75) for radios and heaters . 6-12($70 and $100) depending on amperage. Luck!
