I will be going to look at buying a 1924 Superior. Is there anything in particular I should be on the lookout for? Are there parts available for these cars? Thanks, Tom.

Tom Parts are available. I would make sure it does not overheat as that could indicate cracked head etc. Take it for a ride make sure trans and rear end does not make noise, I like vacuum tanks your should have 8 screws on top, electric fuel pumps can cause problems, some prefer them, I would make sure vacuum tank works, gauges if not nice could cost you 700-900 to get nice rebuilt ones, look for loose wood spokes and tires should be nice. Look at wood perhaps remove a door panel and look, top hardware should all be there. Of course check title numbers and number plate on car. Ken

Thanks Ken. I will be going to look at it on Sunday. The fellow has owned it for 27 years. He restored it years ago. Pictures look good, but I will spend some time in person going over it. Tom

mechanicals are generally plentiful including new used and nos and will need ongoing maintenance anyway so I would focus on the body. If it was a backyard resto the main concern would be the integrity of wood frame. check that all doors open and close nicely and door to body gaps are even. short spring cars have a tendency to twist more so take it for a drive over uneven ground and see how many doors fly open.

I saw the car today. It is in very good condition. The wood is in excellent condition. Tires will need to be replaced. The ring gear has a tooth missing. I can probably fix it. The only real issue that I can see is the oil pump housing is split. It looks like someone tightened a fitting too much. How much trouble would it be to find an oil pump? I haven't made a deal with him yet. Tom

New and used oil pumps are available. I didn't notice a mention on the body style. Touring cars are the most popular. Closed cars are fairly rare. 1933 and 1924's are similar but not identical. Ring and pinions are hard to find for these cars. They are fun cars to own but the later 4 cylinders are significantly more advanced was driving my 1923 yesterday and I still love it.

Its a touring car. I did go for a ride in it. I think it would be a nice addition to my small collection. I will call the seller and try to make a deal. tom

Hi As you state the ring gear has a tooth missing I strongly recommend you to make a simple test of the rear axle. During the last two years I have done a major repair of the rear axle, ring and pinion gears, drive shaft and the U-joint on my 1922 490. The 1922 was the first model with spiral cut teeth on the R&P gears, used also on 1923-24 models. I suggest that you take a look on my post on new production. There you can read about the simple test that I suggest. In that post you will also find a link to my post on drive shaft, ring and pinion gear, rear axle on the 1916-1922 chapter of this forum. We bought our 490 eight years ago, and we really like it. I sit like a king behind the wheel, no problem driving 400-500 miles a day.

I meant the flywheel ring gear. I figure I can probably weld a new tooth in it. The ring gear is cast with the flywheel, it is not separate. I made the fellow an offer on the car Sunday. I will know Monday night if the car is mine.Tom

Ray according to the AACA site no one can sell a car this year and the offers are extremely low. With that in mind do not overpay for any collectible. One post mentioned that they felt no young people are getting into antique cars because of economy and other interests like video games. Start low for collectibles. Ken

Congratulations! Sorry I missunderstood "ring gear". I guess I am obsessed with ring & pinion gears. Still I strongly recommend you to examine the rear axle and make sure that the original babbit thrust washer has been replaced with a bronze washer. Happy riding!

Tom, I have been working on a frame off restoration on a 1923 Touring for the last 7 years. In final paint now and then off to the upholstery. To date I have done more than 90 percent of the work myself and have learned a lot along the way. If I can be of any assistance to you pls send me an email or PM. Best of luck to you on your new ride. Cheers, Tom
