After replacing the points with a NOS set, the engine would start easily and then stop in about 3 minutes. The insulation under the upper or moving part was not wide enough on the peg to separate the two parts causing a short to ground. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Dave,
I've has problems like this before too....it was been a couple of problems. One missing a part in the stack up which Skip helped me figure out. Also the insulator paper getting damaged when installing the points. I've always has problems instilling them and not having issues with them grounding out. A few years ago when I was working on my uncles 31 I figured out to use a 20 ounce pop bottle to make the insulator. I took this one step feature and started using a Mountain Dew bottle. Two plus with this process, the radius of the bottle is almost the same as the 29 to 32 distributor so your not fighting a flat insulator made from paper. Also it is very thin and a good insulator being plastic. Also being Mountain Dew it is a green bottle so you can see it when installed. I also cut the insulator in a "L" shape so it will insulate the breaker plate.
I've done this on about 4 or 5 cars now and never had a problem since.
Let me know if this helps.

I use the full size rattle can tops and cut out three "L" shaped insulators from each. They are thick and flexible enough to give good insulating to the spring, stud and nut.

I think there should be more than one fuse in the electrical system. I like to add a few more fuses here and there, some under the high beam switch.

A fuse is never placed in the headlight circuit. A breaker is used for the headlights. If for example, it is raining, you are approaching a sharp curve, it is dark, and your headlight FUSE blows. Would make for an interesting evening, in addition to a change of pants.

Even with a breaker that's hard on the nerves. The breaker is quite often in the light switch

I've never owned a car with circuit breakers instead of fuses. Unless you can reach breakers instantly, they would have to reset and repeat to give you any emergency lighting.

I do not know the complete application of the breaker, but I know it is on my 1941. If it does 'break' it returns quickly so you have a better chance of not running into something. It takes a short of some duration to activate the breaker.

The breaker should be self resetting... they have a bimetalic spring across the points inside.... so when it gets hot from too many amps running through it the spring bends up thus breaking the connection.
care should be taken to fit them the correct way .. the power supply MUST go to the correct terminal on the breaker... if you dont do this the bimetalic spring will not work correctly.

i have automatic resetting circuit breakers that fit where the fuse goes. Just wondered what the correct amperage should be.
