Question-how does your filter attach to the manifold??..Is it clamped to the intake with two U bolts or a bracket attached in the center held on by the two bolts that hold the intake and exhust manifolds together. This style also has a band that clamps around the filter body.

About a week ago, I saw an ebay auction for a 1947 magazine ad for an AC Oil Filter. The ad showed what appeared to be either an AC L-1 or an AC L-4 Oil Filter. The magazine ad did not specify what type of automobiles these were being sold to. Did Chevrolet use AC L-1's and AC L-4's in 1947 and then switch to AC S-6 oil filters in 1948?

To the best of my knowledge and memory this is what I believe to be the correct oil filter types and colors.

Prior to 1948 the "L" series were sold. They attached to the intake to exhaust manifold bolts in the center of the manifold and were held to the baracket with a band that went around the filter. They were solid light gray in color -are shown with an round AC decal on the side in some pictures and with a retangular decal with instructions printed on it in others. The same canister was used for various GM cars as well as other applications.

The 1948-49 used the S-6 style filter which was of the same size but had a bracket welded to one side and was attached to the rear half of the intake manifold with two U bolts. This filter is yellow with a black lid.

In 1950 the filter looked the same but the color changed to bright blue with an orange lid. From this time up to 1962 if the filter was factory installed (it was an option) it was black. The same filter was used thru 1962.In 1962 they were standard equipment and were only black. The same filter with a different bracket was also used on a 1955 V-8.

A picture of the orange and blue filter mounted on a 1951 engine can be seen on the forum on overflow tank color question.

There were many other brands of filters available. The orange Fram was also popular.Often filters were installed after the cars were a few years and also many dealers installed other brands than just AC.

The first year the complete filter installation kit is listed in the parts book is 1950.Prior to that only the canister less brackets were shown. At that time the complete kit was purchased thru an AC distributor.---confusing?
