Chef, Yes the pully is removable, I would use a hydralic press and be sure that there is adequate support for the pully hub so that the pully won't be distorted, I would support the back side of the pully hub and press the shaft out with an extension just smaller than the shaft. Usually that isn't necessary since a complete replacement pump for a 216 is available for less than $60.00 Try Terrill Machine Company , DeLeon, Texas 76444, They advertise from time to time in the G&D and also Hemmings.

So I guess it would be sensless to consider rebuilding the water pump unless you own the tools needed i.e. hydralic press etc.I have an old one and wanted to play around and rebuild it seeings I've never done one before..chef- chevy

Chef, I would not consider re-building your pump "useless" also any auto machine shop would probably press the pulley off for you at a mimimum cost. It may help you understand the engineering that went into your car, it is also self satisfying to me to salvage a piece of old iron and return it to good working condition.
In fact I have several old pumps lying around somewhere that I have replaced with NRS pumps that I intend to rebuild or "Restore" When I get "a-round-2-it" Ha!

Chef, The pulley is removed using J-1226 puller. You attach the puller to the pulley, place puller plate in vise and tighten puller screw to remove pulley. You can make a puller if you don't have J-1226. Just be sure the puller plate has 4 holes and can be held in a vise. The next step in pump overhaul is remove the bearing retainer from the pump body. Try using a long drift punch to drive off the retainer, if this doesn't work you'll have to devise a puller. The final step is to press the shaft (with bearing assembly attached) out of the rotor, pressing from the rotor side. Good luck, Larry.
