I ordered a 4/0 positive cable with the ends attached from Pacer Group and received it within a week. It seems to be pretty good quality. I ordered it without the boots but they were included anyway and can be removed if desired. Shipping was $14.80 UPS from Florida to Kansas. Just wish I would have got the black instead of red...

No mixing up the pos or neg with that red which is common for the positive cables for other applications, mostly heavy equipment.

If you really want it black, there's always spray paint.

If you have a Tractor Supply you will find a great selection of cables, ends and loops and both colors, plus reasonably priced. Reno, NV

I went to my local welding supply for the cable. Then took them to a auto part store that puts the ends on.

Some Starter and Generator rebuilders make up battery cables also.

It is the wire gauge size of the cables. The higher the number the smaller the wire so a 0 gauge is much larger than a 22 gauge. 2/0 is 00 and 4/0 would be 0000 referred to as two aught and four aught. From what I understand (and may have misinterpreted) electricity flows on the outside diameter of the wire so the larger the wire ( thus surface area) more electricity can flow.

I have been told that the positive and negative wire sizes should be the same. I have two 1" flat wire ground straps about one foot long. I need a 3 foot positive cable to reach the starter. What would be the wire gauge that I need for the positive cable?

Battery cables are easy to make. You get the size cable you want, the color cable you want, and the exact length you want. I got all the parts at Carquest, which may not exist anymore, but surely NAPA or some other supplier has the same stuff. You just solder the parts on to the cable ends. Nothing to it. Cheaper and better than anything you can buy already made up.

Soldering alone can fail if the is any bad connection at the bolt, it is much better to crimp then solder.

How do you crimp the end of the cable that goes on the battery?

Most of the replacement battery ends I have seen are crimpable even the solid brass type.
